Work package 8 - Capacity building

Overall objective

To build capacity of partners, health providers and health policy makers in the north and in the south throughout the research project.

Specific objectives
  • To build research capacity of partners, health providers and health policy makers in the south and north by cooperating closely among partners throughout the whole research project and sharing advice among each other if needed and/or asked for; and

  • To build capacity of European partners by better understanding health systems and constraints in the south and enabling them to identify fields which need further research and funding in the future.

Description

This research project will be used as a tool to build capacity of health professionals in the south on postpartum and newborn care, on health system strengthening and on research. The capacity building will focus on four levels:

  • Building capacity of primary health care providers (facility-based health care providers as well as community workers) based in the countries where the research study takes place. Although training of health care providers based at the study sites to enable the implementation of the selected intervention packages are already covered by work package 5, this project will also provide the opportunity to further upgrade primary health care providers' knowledge and skills regarding postpartum and newborn care related topics. This will be done by organizing workshops and disseminating relevant information;

  • Building capacity of senior health providers based in the countries/regions where the research study takes place by conducting workshops and disseminating information relevant for this research project;

  • Building capacity of local and national health policy makers by conducting workshops and disseminating information relevant for this research project;

  • Building individual research capacity by offering the opportunity for 1 researcher per study site to enrol in a PhD or masters programme being supported by one of the research partners from an EU member state.

Depending on capacity building needs and on the interests of the local partners and/or health providers and/or policymakers, the appropriate workshop topics as well as the level/professional background of workshop participants will differ across the study sites. It will be the responsibility of the work package leader in coordination and cooperation with the local partner to assess the capacity building needs and interests in each of the study sites. Annually, at each site one capacity building workshop will be conducted by the project.

The expected outcome of work package 8 is improved capacity of local research partners and/or health providers and/or policymakers in the field of postpartum and newborn care and/or health system strengthening and/or research in health.
